The Chickering Piano Company
The Chickering Piano Company was established in 1823 by Jonas Chickering and James Stewart. The company widely known as Chickering & Sons wasn’t named that until 1852 when Jonas Brought his 3 sons into the company. His Son Thomas took control After he died in 1853. Thomas died in 1871 leaving the company to brothers Frank and George. They both died in the 1890s and by 1908 the company was in bad shape and thus was bought by the American Piano Company. The Chickering company brought 2 major contributions to modern piano engineering. in 1843 they produced the 1st Cast iron frame for both uprights and grand pianos and in 1850 they introduced the Overstrung scale.
